FREE ENGLISH LESSONS – The Welcoming

The Welcoming is, among other things, a cultural integration charity which aims to make it easier for immigrants and refugees to integrate into the Edinburgh community. There are a number of different parts to their work, including tours of Edinburgh, social meets and of most interest to me, free English lessons.

I first heard of the charity from my TEFL instructor who suggested it would be a great way to gain some classroom experience, and after looking into them a bit more I decided I had to get involved! Last week marked the end of my summer volunteering with them and I would urge anyone who is thinking of pursuing a TEFL qualification or who already has one and is looking for some experience to get involved. If you can’t commit to regular lessons then I am sure they would love teachers who are interested in cover support.

The staff and volunteers are very lovely and welcoming, not to mention the students who are full of brilliant stories and eager to learn.

If you are, or know anyone who is, new to Edinburgh and looking to improve their English then I would highly recommend The Welcoming! Classes cover all levels so you will be able to find one which challenges you and are on a drop-in basis meaning that there is no need to book in advance. As classes are drop-in,  there is no set curriculum so if you miss a session you won’t be behind when you return.

As an added bonus to improving your English, classes are great fun and sociable helping you make friends within the expat community living in Edinburgh (you even get a free coffee and biscuit break)!
