Saving Google Maps offline is a great hack for ensuring you won’t get lost when travelling as it gives you the ability to find directions and search for points of interest even without internet or signal. I used Google Maps a lot offline when I was motorbiking through Vietnam as I was often in the countryside without phone signal.
How to Save Google Maps Offline
Note: To save Google maps offline you will need to be connected to the internet
Open the Google maps app on your phone and click on the three lines in the top left hand corner. This will open the menu. Once open, click to go to your “offline maps”.
Once in “offline maps” click to create a new custom map. Drag the selected area until you can fit in the whole are you need to save offline.(If you’re motorbiking then ensure that the whole route you are driving is included in the offline area). When you have the whole area selected, click download. This will save the map offline.
Tip: You can see how much space the offline map is going to use up on your phone.
Once the map is downloaded, it is officially saved offline. You can now edit the name of your offline map so that you know what it is. For example when I was motorbiking I had a map saved offline for each of the routes that I drove – without renaming them it would have been hard to tell which map was which.
