What’s Happening in Saigon: October Events

Hey there October! Ho Chi Minh City is such an exciting and vibrant place to live and a big part of my love for living in Saigon is thanks to the amazing arts scene, abundance of events and things to get involved in every month. If you’re new to the city, looking for something fun to experience or simply a traveler passing through looking to sample the expat social-scene then you’ve come to the right place! Here is a rundown of what’s happening in Saigon during October 2018!

By no means are these all the events that are happening in the city – these are some that I felt were worth highlighting and that would be of interest to expats living in Vietnam like myself.

October Events in Ho Chi Minh City

Soma Screening // Suspiria

Start October by getting into the Halloween Spirit with the 70s art film, Suspiria. Entry is free, just grab yourself a drink for the screening and you’re good to go!

Chill-Out Tuesdays – Sunset Yoga and Meditation

Needing a little bit of zen in your busy Saigon life? Relax in the green rooftop and pool of The ArcanStone and enjoy free sunset yoga every Tuesday night in October. With healthy food and smoothies on offer, this is the perfect place for a midweek escape!

Ikebana Class (For Beginners + Students)

Join Spin and Gogh for a morning of learning to create a “basic upright moribana” plant arrangement. This is perfect for creative beings!

Indika Jam

This jamming session tends to showcase Reggae, Dub, Hiphop and Soul music with an open mic element that welcomes both amateurs and professionals to join in! Wanting to perform? Register in advance and you’ll bag a few beer! Head early to get some grub and happy hour!

Thursday Outdoor Cinema – The Lion King

Punch Needle Workshop

This is another one for all the arty beings out there! Try your hand at punch needle and create a masterpiece to take home with you. Tickets include all materials and tuition by Mlle Miao Saigon.

Join GenderFunk for a night of an evening of filth, horror and glamour drag inspired by The Boulet Brother Dragula show. Complete with a lipsync battle voted for by the audience.

Thao Dien Flea Market

Thao Dien Flea Market is a collection of pop-up stalls selling a range of gifts, unique clothes and handmade things. In addition to browsing through the market you can grab some grub and a drink and enjoy the market atmosphere.

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

This months book club event, run by Wine & Words, Books & Beer: Monthly Book Club at Indika. This months book is Trevor Noahs autobiography about growing up in apartheid South Africa, to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother.

Murder at the Juice Joint | Murder Mystery Saigon

“A night of intrigue and mystery in the wild an romantic era of the roaring 20’s”

Murder at the Juice Joint is the second themed murder mystery night to be run in Saigon, complete with character roles and dress code, this looks to be a fun night for anyone looking to do something alternative in the city!

If you’re keen for this event be sure to get tickets soon as there is a limited number and it must be booked in advance!

Take Me Home | Documentary Screening

Soma are hosting an exciting documentary screening of awarding winning film Take Me Home, which was actually filmed in Saigon!

Winner of Best Documentary Feature Film at the Sydney World Film Festival, the film Take Me Home. The film by Louis Corallo (who will be at the viewing) follows Kyle Poirrier; a brilliant Australian English teacher who fell to a stroke when he was teaching English in Vietnam. The film explores Kyle’s relationship with his carer, and how he struggled to get home to Sydney when the Australian embassy and his health insurance abandoned him at his most vulnerable time.

This looks to be a very eye opening screening and well worth checking out! Plus its free!

Locally Trapped Wildlife #10: HCMC Alternative Music Showcase

Join Yoko cafe for the 10th instalment of Locally Trapped Wildlife, a HCMC-based, artist-curated, alternative music showcase. Already set to perform at this instalment are Gen (an indie-rock trio), Magic Pinions (described as an experimental a one-man sound experience), and OPN AIR DRG MKT (rock n’ roll energy laced with cosmic abstractions).

Sofar Secret Sessions

The infamous Sofar sessions are running a secret gig in Thao Dien this month, be sure to apply to the raffle draw to try and grab some free tickets!

Thao Dien Farmer’s Market

Rocktober Festival

Rocktober is returning for its second year with a weekend filled with rock climbing, markets, live music and competitive climbing at Saigon Outcasts climbing wall. It looks set to be a festive weekend for climbers and observers alike!
