Photo Journal: Angkor Wat

During Tet 2019, I was super lucky to have my mum visit me in Asia. While it was really special to share where I live with her, I was also keen to show her some highlights of south east Asia. And, well, Angkor Wat was the first thing that came to mind! So after a week in Ho Chi Minh City, we hopped over to Cambodia to explore the temples of Angkor.

To me, Angkor Wat just oozes mystery. How was this huge city of temples left, more-or-less, undisturbed for centuries. I can’t imagine what it must have been like as one of the first archeologists from the west to visit Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. It must have been utterly mind-blowing to find temple after temple, hidden by the dense jungle. Almost like winning the lottery.

Angkor Wat was the state temple of King Suryavarman II who built it as part of his city complex, Angkor Thom in the late 9th century. It’s not quite known why but it was largely neglected from the 16th century until western explorers re-popularised it in the 19th century!

Rather unsurprisingly, Angkor Wat has become the emblem of Cambodia. Images of its iconic central towers often take centre place on logos, and Angkor Wat even makes an appearance on the Cambodian flag!

Angkor Wat is walled temple, with a series of layers leading you up to the inner sanctuary of the temple. After climbing up a set of steep steps, you’re rewarded with a view over the whole temple and it’s here that you really get a sense for the scale of Angkor Wat.
